WFP: 4 Million Afghans, Including 3.2 Million Children, Suffer Acute Malnutrition

Kabul: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that four million individuals in Afghanistan are suffering from acute malnutrition, among whom 3.2 million are children under the age of 5. According to the agency’s recent findings, between November 2023 and March 2024, approximately 15.8 million people in the country are facing acute food insecurity, with 3.6 million experiencing an emergency level of food insecurity.
The WFP has emphasized that 23.7 million individuals will need humanitarian assistance in 2024. The report also highlights the flooding of numerous communities across Afghanistan due to heavy rains in March. “WFP has activated its contingency plan and is distributing high-energy biscuits to affected households as part of its immediate response.
This will be followed by the provision of food rations, which will commence once affected households are verified,” stated the report. Additionally, the UN food agency has aided over 660,000 Afghan returnees who crossed from Pakistan and returned to areas within Afghanistan since the influx began in November.
